myUSO – a new online bookmarking service

myUSO is a password-protected bookmark service for all USO-enabled schools, giving school staff the ability to pre-configure a set of managed links to Internet and Intranet-based services for their users.

By creating a publishable ‘Home page’ from which staff and pupils can easily access all USO authenticated services, plus any additional web-based services linked alongside, myUSO presents a simple, convenient and organised route to online resources for schools.

myUSO can be configured by staff for use by any person in their school that has a USO account. Staff can create tabs within the website which contain links relevant to all users, staff-only, or specified year groups or classes, and make each tab visible accordingly.

All users except young children using a special ‘Early Years’ log in can sort, search and filter the links available to them through an intuitive control which also defines how the information about each link is viewed.

Additionally, all users can easily create a set of personal bookmarks with just a simple ‘drag & drop’ structure enabling links to be organised into folders.

An unlimited number of links can be placed within each tab, and the collection of bookmarks presented to pupils and staff can be as limited, or as comprehensive, as the school wishes.

myUSO is a free service available to any USO-enabled school, and can be accessed via http://my.uso.im/ using any student or staff USO account.

Full details about the service are available here.

Just started to look at this and it would be an advantage to be able to cut and paste in urls. I cannot seem to do that at the moment.

Looks a good feature. well done to all concerned.

  2. Vandana Mayer from Wessex Gardens Primary School in Barnet says:

Really good idea and very useful but as above cannot cut and paste urls and if the website is slow responding won’t add the url, says it is invalid or offline !!

  3. Inna Shaykis from Atomwide Domain in Atomwide says:

    Hello Tony and Vandana

The issue with cutting and pasting links had been affecting Firefox browswers and is now resolved.

When adding a URL, the site is contacted so an image can be generated for your links. If the site is slow or does not respond, the site won’t be found by our system and an error may occur. This can often be resolved by trying again later when any technical issues with the target site have been dealt with by that provider.

If anyone wishes to add links to internal URLs, please enter the IP address of the required location instead of a normal URL in order for the site to be contactable.

Can we change the default tab?
I would like to make our customised tab the default one instead of the LGFL one.

  5. Inna Shaykis from Atomwide Domain in Atomwide says:

    Hi Martin

The Default tab is preconfigured by us to contain links to all types of relevant locations. This makes it easy for you and other users to select just the ones you require and put them into a tab for others.

You can, however, choose to not show the Default tab to pupils (using the tick box at the top) so their default tab will be the one you configure for them.

Interesting and potential very useful. Would be good if can access direct from the Support site when logged in – particularly for users that have USO tag. Helen

Really nice idea. Great as a landing page and it also works well when added as a personal or room tool in Fronter and displayed within the frame.

Is it possible to have an option to hide the title banner as this takes up a lot of space particularly on some of the lower resolution screens in schools?

Is there the possibility of sharing experience and practice here by having a “Recommended” tab which is automatically populated by links that staff have star rated?

  8. Martin Coulson from Atomwide Domain in Atomwide says:

Thanks for the feedback especially the Fronter comments – this works well if the LA has adopted Shibboleth as the default Fronter auth method.

The Title banner holds the site together and forms part of the cosmetic look of the Early Years log on part of the system released at the LGfL conference so I’m afraid it’s there to stay.

You can already create a ‘recommended’ tab and place links in there that are visible to the whole school – what is missing is an LA wide ‘recommended’ tab

    A couple of issues…

some websites cannot be added, for example, one many people might want to use – mail.lgflmail.org (even with the IP address as numbers). Gives error: The URL is invalid or the site is offline.

The additional information does not show under the icons when the icons are in grid view. This does show in list view.

Can these be tweaked so they can work?

  10. Inna Shaykis from Atomwide Domain in Atomwide says:

As you correctly point out, StaffMail (mail.lgflmail.org) is indeed a site many people would want to link to and there is a preconfigured link to this in the Library already to make it easy for everyone to add it to another tab. However, if you wish to create a link to it yourself, that is also possible by entering the correct URL (not IP address). An IP address should only be used in a link if your are linking to an internal resource located inside your school. If you have tried to do this and it hasn’t worked please do let us know.

As far as the amount of information visible in the grid view, this is a compacted view and some of the additional information is quite long so displaying it in this type of layout is, unfortunately, not physically possible.
